Choose eco friendly Christmas decorations for a greener Christmas

Christmas generates a lot of waste from unwanted gifts, wrapping paper, over-catering and Christmas decorations. It can be so tempting to get into the festive spirit by making impulse purchases of decorations when you go shopping but it’s unlikely this will be a sustainable option. Here we have 20 sustainable Christmas decoration ideas that you can feel good about.

Sustainability 101

1. Reuse your existing Christmas decorations

The most sustainable Christmas decorations are the ones you already have! I actually find it really exciting to pull out the old decorations, considering they haven’t been seen in 11 months. It’s nice to reminisce about where each one came from, if they were a gift or homemade and how long you’ve had each decoration.

Also consider mending or repairing any Christmas decorations that may have deteriorated after being in cramped storage for most of the year.

2. Buy second hand Christmas decorations

There is no need to buy new decorations when there are thousands of preloved Christmas decorations floating around the community. As well as being sustainable, buying second hand will also save you money.

Op shops or thrift shops tend to create a Christmas section in November and December that can be browsed for Christmas decorations. If there are no second hand stores nearby or you prefer to browse from home, try Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or Craigslist.

Ask your Buy Nothing Facebook group or other community groups if anyone has Christmas decorations surplus to their needs.

Solar Powered Christmas Decorations

If you love to have Christmas lights then aim to get solar powered Christmas decorations. Having Christmas lights running for a whole month can use a lot of energy. Solar powered Christmas lights will reduce your energy consumption which is better for the planet and your wallet.

There are increasingly more solar powered options available and they make total sense if you’re in the Southern hemisphere and are enjoying Christmas during summer with long days and plenty of sunshine.
