This recipe came into existence when my daughter asked me to make apple oatmeal like she has at her grandparents’ house. I knew the oatmeal she was talking about came from a packet but I didn’t think it would be too difficult to make up an oatmeal with apple in it.
Apple, cinnamon and sultanas are a classic combo. That’s all I’ve added to a basic oatmeal recipe and it tastes brilliant. I don’t even like oatmeal but I’ve started making this recipe for breakfast often and sometimes just as a healthy snack. It’s a new favourite for my four year old too.
The best thing about this recipe is it uses common household ingredients and can be whipped up in just 5 minutes. Using grated apple means it doesn’t need to be cooked beforehand, it just slightly softens while the oatmeal is cooking.
My apple and cinnamon oatmeal recipe is also really healthy, not having any added sugar or honey. There is plenty of natural sweetness from all the other ingredients though; apple, cinnamon, sultanas and even the milk.
This recipe is very forgiving. You can slightly alter the ingredients and it still turns out fine. So you don’t need to worry what size apple you’re using or if your toddler wants to help and doesn’t quite get the measurements right.
Depending on the size of the apple or how juicy it is, you may like to add a little extra milk. This depends on your oatmeal consistency preference too but you can add extra at the end as desired.

This looks like a perfect breakfast for autumn! I love that it’s easy to make, and it uses ingredients that many people already have in their home.
This sounds like such a lovely breakfast, and perfect for this time of year.
What a great, simple, healthy snack! And since it’s apple season I will give this recipe a try for sure!
Thanks for the easy recipe. Will be trying!
Hello, do I have to use only a microwave for cooking it or even other means can work?
Thank you
I haven’t tried this recipe on the stove top but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I’d be careful to stir a lot though to ensure it doesn’t burn on the bottom.
