7 Reusable cutlery sets for on the go.

Single use plastic bans are planned for most states and territories in Australia and that includes plastic cutlery. This is fantastic news!

Now there is no reason to freak out that you’ll get caught out without cutlery and have nothing to eat with. The default replacement for takeaway businesses will be to switch to bamboo cutlery, indeed many more eco conscious businesses already have. While bamboo will break down faster than plastic, bamboo forks that will be used once and then thrown away is still a huge waste.

It will take some getting used to bringing your own cutlery but if you have a compact travel cutlery set, it can simply become a staple for your handbag or backpack along with wallet, sunglasses etc. I quickly got in the habit of bringing reusable fruit and veg bags when heading to the supermarket and BYO cutlery can be the new norm too.

Owning a portable cutlery set is also super convenient. Before I commenced a greener lifestyle, I purchased a travel cutlery set to take travelling during my gap year. It was so handy to have a tiny foldable fork, spoon and knife on me at all times and surprisingly it turned out that I used the knife the most. Now that I work in the CBD I will often purchase takeaway for lunch and a fork is my most used item.

Another thing to look out for if you’re a superstar and remember to bring your own cutlery is to tell the person serving you that you don’t require any. I am always so disappointed when I’m not paying attention and then find a disposable fork in my bag of food.

Your most basic sets come with a fork, spoon and knife. The most complete utensil sets will additionally include chopsticks, a straw and cleaning brush. All are plastic free and made from durable and sustainable materials such as bamboo, metal or corn.

Some travel cutlery sets are loose or they may come in a soft wrap or hard. They are all fairly compact but some even fold or collapse for added space saving.

Which travel cutlery set will be best suited to you? Have a look at the 7 options below and check the recommendations at the end to help you decide.

A travel cutlery set to suit everyone.

1. Carry Your Cutlery

Well the Carry Your Cutlery Kit is certainly the prettiest set in this list. If the pattern or colour is not to your taste, there are many other styles to choose from.

On top of being attractive, this travel cutlery set is equipped with full size stainless steel utensils. It doesn’t even feel like you’re using a travel set.

Made in Australia, this kit contains a fork, spoon, knife, chopsticks, straw and cleaning brush.

2. Onyx Stainless Steel Cutlery Set

The Onyx Stainless Steel Cutlery Set is super compact. The chopsticks have the handy feature of separating into two pieces to fit into the aluminium case which is just 14cm long. If you’re short on space, this is the one for you.

Made of stainless steel, this product should last forever. The utensils are easy to clean in the dishwasher and will help you to refuse disposable cutlery at your next takeaway meal.

3. Black + Blum Stainless Steel Cutlery Set

This Black + Blum utensil set includes the essentials of spoon, fork and knife. They all fit together tightly into a travel case for compact storage and to avoid making anything else dirty once used.

This sleek design is dishwasher safe and perfect to avoid single use cutlery.

4. Green + Kind Bamboo Cutlery Set

The Green + Kind Bamboo Cutlery Set has every utensil you could possibly need when dining out. As well as the standard fork, spoon and knife it also comes with chopsticks, a straw and straw cleaning brush. They all come in a roll up canvas pouch.

With a pocket for each utensil it is easy to grab which one you’re after. The bamboo and canvas materials make this set lovely and lightweight.

5. Eco Vessel 6 Piece Rainbow Stainless Steel Cutlery

Oh my goodness, I can’t get over how beautiful this Rainbow Stainless Steel Cutlery from EcoVessel is! It contains all the cutlery you could possibly need in a compact carry case and the straw has a rubber tip for comfortable drinking.

It also comes in black if you’re after something a bit more understated.

6. To-Go Ware Kids Bamboo Utensil Set

Bamboo is a sustainable material as it is fast growing and requires little water and no pesticides or fertilisers. It is also biodegradable and perfect for utensils as it is heat and stain resistant.

The To-Go Ware Kids Bamboo Utensils comes with a fork, spoon and knife in a neat little set. The pouch is made from recycled plastic bottles (I love anything that makes use of a waste material!) and has a carabiner to make it easy to attach to a school bag.

7. Porter Stainless Steel Utensil Set

Another stainless steel cutlery set, Porter contains the fork, spoon and knife in a silicone carry case. The travel cutlery set is slim and boasts a sharp knife.

The stainless steel cutlery is dishwasher safe, will not rust and feels like using proper cutlery.

So how do they compare?

My pick of the bunch is the Carry Your Cutlery Kit. I like that it is made in Australia, dishwashable and I prefer to eat off metal cutlery. But which is best for you?

  1. We have been looking for a set that includes a straw to take to Disney with us! Thank you for these recommendations.

  2. I love these options of reusable cutlery! I use almost exclusively reusable items for packing my kids’ lunches, but I haven’t thought of reusable cutlery outside of what came with their hot Thermoses. I will have to try these. The silicone set looks like it would be great for my kiddos.

  3. I applaud the ban on plastic. We can all do our bit by eliminating plastic from our daily use as much as possible. I love the bamboo cutlery. We’ll definitely get a set for when we travel.

  4. I’ve been trying my best to go green and use stainless steel or wooden cutlery for packing lunches. You have listed out some great recommendations!
