Refill your hand wash, waste free.
Foaming hand soap tablets are a new and innovative way to clean your hands. They are very convenient and easy to use. You just need to add water and they will create a foamy lather that will clean your hands effectively, plastic free.
From the first time I started using foaming hand soap, there was no turning back. It just felt so nice and foamy! Haha but really apart from the nice feeling I became a total convert for these reasons:
- Uses less water to create a lather
- More economical
- Less time required to create a lather
- No scummy soap build up like from bar soap

Foaming hand soap tablets and powders – the way of the future
As I progressed along my sustainability journey, I realised that the hand soap we were buying had to go. We were constantly purchasing refill bottles of foaming hand soap and sometimes the whole soap-filled dispenser if it was on sale and hence the cheaper option. These were all consequently getting discarded. Such a waste.
When I started to investigate waste free hand soap, I thought my only options would be to find a local retailer where I could refill my own containers. And then I was expecting to be limited to liquid hand soap refills rather than a foaming hand soap.
I was so excited by the discovery of foaming hand soap refills in tablet form. It is such a brilliant idea! Without any liquid, they come in tiny packages so are space saving – both for warehouses and home cupboards. Instead of needlessly shipping water, it can be added at point of use which also reduces carbon footprint.
The best thing about foaming hand wash refill powders/tablets is that being a dry product, no plastic container is required to transport it! Apart from less plastic waste being a huge environmental win, you are also not having to pay for the container each time.
Another low waste alternative is to make your own foaming hand wash. Check out the video below to see how easy it is.
How do foaming hand wash refill tablets work?
All the hand soap powders or tablets below come in a small compostable sachet, usually in a pack of 10 because they take up no space and it saves you from ordering again any time soon. You then dissolve the tablet in water to make up the foaming hand wash and it’s ready. Easy!
Each brand offers its own glass hand soap dispenser or alternatively they will work equally well in any existing foaming hand soap dispenser you already have. You need to be careful using other dispensers to add the right amount of water though.
Please note that foaming hand soaps will not work in an ordinary soap dispenser designed for liquid soap. Foaming hand soap dispensers have a wider neck and create aeration of the soap to create the foam.
Personally I have continued to use the existing plastic hand soap dispensers I already had. Firstly I see no point in buying a new one when the ones I have work perfectly well. Secondly, I have small children so I am not game to have glass in the bathroom when the dispenser could easily get dropped on the tiles by small slippery hands.

They sold out twice in their first year!

I like the single use ain’t sexy handwash pump and tablet idea. I think I’ve seen one at a friend’s house before. I’m going to try it too!
These are great! Sometimes when you run to the store, it is easy to grab the 99 cent bottle of soap. But after having kids, I realized 1) super wasteful 2) harsh unnecessary chemicals. Will check out Tirtyl, I love that they donate to fight ocean waste.
Do you know if you can use the tablets in between brands? I love the Happy Human bottles but want to try the different tirtyl fragrances!
Yes you can definitely use them in different bottles! Just check how much water is required to ensure you use the right amount for the brand in case they differ.
This is a game changer. I didn’t know foam tablet hand wash refills exists. Hope this products are available in the US. I am such a huge fan of foam handwash.
Tirtyl is available in the US
Fab selection! Azur Pure Skincare do refillable hand wash in glass or aluminum bottles. No sachets. Just send back empty bottles freepost for re-use.
Cool! Is that one foaming too? Zero Co also have a returnable reuseable package of hand wash but it’s not a foaming one which is why I prefer these.
The list you created about foaming hand wash refills are really amazing.
